Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about File Fortress
General Questions
File Fortress is a secure cloud file management platform that helps you organize, search, and manage files across multiple cloud storage services while keeping your data completely private. Unlike other services, we use a local CLI application that means your file information never leaves your device.
The key difference is privacy and security. Most cloud management tools require you to upload your data to their servers, creating privacy risks. File Fortress uses a local CLI application, which means:
- Your file data stays on your device
- Only encrypted metadata is processed
- No third-party access to your files
- Complete control over your data
File Fortress currently supports:
- Google Drive
- Dropbox
- AWS S3
- Backblaze B2
We're continuously adding support for more cloud storage providers based on user demand.
Yes, File Fortress is currently in its alpha stage. We're working every day to improve the platform and add new features. As an alpha user, your feedback is invaluable in helping us build the best possible product.
Security & Privacy
Privacy is our top priority. Here's how we protect your data:
- Local Processing: All file analysis happens on your device
- No File Storage: We never store your actual files on our servers
- Encrypted Metadata: Only encrypted metadata is processed
- Zero Knowledge: We can't see your file contents or names
We collect minimal data necessary for the service to function:
- Account information (email, encrypted passwords)
- Device registration data
- Encrypted file metadata (sizes, dates, hashes)
- Usage analytics (anonymized)
We never collect or store your actual file contents.
File Fortress uses industry-standard encryption:
- AES-256: For data encryption at rest
- TLS 1.3: For data in transit
- Local Keys: Encryption keys are generated and stored locally
- Zero Knowledge: We can't decrypt your data even if we wanted to
The local database that stores your file index (but never your file contents) is always encrypted. You have two modes to choose from:
- Automatic Encryption (Default): This is the easiest option. The encryption key is securely bound to your device, so you don't have to manage or type a password. It's ideal for use on a single computer.
- Custom Password: You can set your own master password during initialization. This gives you greater control and makes your configuration portable, allowing you to access it on multiple devices using your password or a convenient key file (created with the
--create-key-file
option).
You can learn more on our Security page.
File Fortress only requests the minimum permissions necessary to read file metadata from your cloud storage. We cannot:
- Download or access your file contents
- Modify or delete your files
- Share your files with others
- Access files you haven't explicitly connected
Features
File Fortress offers powerful file management capabilities:
- Unified Search: Search across all your cloud storage services
- Duplicate Detection: Find and manage duplicate files
- Storage Analytics: Understand your storage usage patterns
- File Organization: Organize files across multiple clouds
- Advanced Queries: Find files by size, date, type, and more
File Fortress uses advanced algorithms to identify duplicates:
- Content Hashing: Compares file contents, not just names
- Cross-Cloud Detection: Finds duplicates across different storage services
- Smart Matching: Identifies similar files with different names
- Safe Recommendations: Suggests which duplicates to keep or remove
Currently, File Fortress focuses on analysis and organization rather than syncing. However, file synchronization features are planned for future releases based on user feedback and demand.
File Fortress works with all file types supported by your cloud storage providers. The CLI can analyze metadata for any file type, including documents, images, videos, archives, and more.
Technical Questions
File Fortress CLI is available for:
- Windows: Windows 10 and later
- macOS: macOS 10.15 (Catalina) and later
- Linux: Most modern distributions
Installation is simple:
- Create a File Fortress account
- Download the CLI for your operating system
- Run the installer and follow the setup wizard
- Register your device with your account
- Connect your cloud storage services
Minimum requirements:
- RAM: 512 MB available memory
- Storage: 100 MB free disk space
- Network: Internet connection for cloud access
- Permissions: Ability to install software
File Fortress requires an internet connection to access your cloud storage services. However, once metadata is cached locally, you can perform many operations offline, including searching and analyzing previously scanned files.
